Washington Senior Games Adds Volkssports
July 24th volksmarch part of Washington Senior Games in Tumwater
Sunshine, smiles, and yellow shirts were everywhere as almost 2,000 athletes, including 138 walkers, gathered at Tumwater High School on Saturday, July 24, to participate in the Washington State Senior Games track meet. For the first time, volkswalking was offered as an event!
The Capitol Volkssport Club hosted the volkswalk at the invitation of the Puget Sound Senior Games, sponsors of the Washington State Senior Games since 1997. All groups share a common mission to encourage more people to get off the couch and make exercise a year-round and fun habit. The 5K and 10K walks took in some of the more scenic and interesting sights in the Tumwater area and included AVA and ESVA challenges (fire stations, forests, mountains, statues, and fountains).
All participants received a free Senior Games T-shirt, compliments of the Senior Games.
Walkers included people from many areas of the country as well as neighbors wanting to learn more about volkssporting and the Senior Games. Some veteran volkssporters stopped by on their way to the Northwest Regional Convention in Alaska. There were even children and dogs who enjoyed the walk. We hope to see them again at more volkswalks and at the Senior Games in 2011.
